Tan Son Nhat International Airport, is situated on the main air routes with high volume of passenger of the East - West and North - South of the region that is a very convenient location for civil aviation operation, the gateway from Ho Chi Minh City to the other destinations in the world, the convenient and ideal transfer & transit hub in the route network from Europe, South Asia to Southeast Asia, North East, North Asia and Asia Pacific.

Tan Son Nhat International Airport is a civil airport combined with military flight operation, in which the civil area is located in the East and the South, the military area is located in the west and the north of the airport. Tan Son Nhat Int’l Airport is able to accommodate the scheduled flights, unscheduled flights, personal aircrafts, charter flights, commercial flights, technical flights, and serves 24/24h.

1. Location:

From the aerodrome reference point, Tan Son Nhat Int’l airport is 06 km away from the city center (at direction of 3140 against the headquarter of the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City)  

Co-ordinate of aerodrome reference point is at the intersection of the 07R/25L RWY and the South-North TXY, geographic coordinate: 10049’13.63”N - 106039’39.23”E (WGS-84);

High reference point: 10 meters against the medium sea level

 2. Development process:

Tan Son Nhat International Airport inherited from the former regime in 1975, comprising of military and civil areas, civil terminal, the capacity of about 1.5 million passengers per year, well-equipped ground handling facilities, commercial facilities and passenger services. All facilities remained intact because they were handed over to the Vietnam People’s Army early. Besides, the infrastructure and facilities were repaired and normally put into operation, the most import mission was to take over the Technical Center belonged to “Vietnam Airlines” and “ Department of Air Operation” owned by civil aviation center, and recover the control tower, reconstruction the civil terminals.

On 01 May 1975, the helicopter, steered by the pilot MI6 Le Dinh Ky, 916 Air Force Regiment, became the first aircraft with insignia of Vietnam People's Air Force landing on Tan Son Nhat International Airport. On 03 May 1975, the IL14 cargo aircraft of 919 Brigade carrying officials ans technical facilities landing at Tan Son Nhat to enhance technical assurance serving scheduled flights to/from Tan Son Nhat airport.

On 15 May 1975, it was honor that the National President Ton Duc Thang together with the Party and Governmental leadership was carried by the IL18 aircraft of 919 Brigade to Sai Gon to participate in the victory celebration. On the same day, after taking over 4 civil aircrafts, the takeover forces completely restored and put them into operation. Saigon – Hanoi routes and Saigon to other southern destinations commenced with the aircraft volume of 5-6 flights per day.

In the past years, Tan Son Nhat International Airport was continuously installed modern facilities so as to enhance infrastructure for civilized and courteous passenger service. The volume of passenger, cargo and traffic movements have rapidly increased year by year that helps Tan Son Nhat Int’l airport own the highest handling capacity in Vietnam, play as a major role to attract investments, tourism, cultural and commercial activities between Vietnam in general & Ho Chi Minh city in particular and the world.  

Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang passed the Decision 3193/QĐ-BGTVT dated on 07 September 2015 approving the adjustment of detailed master plan of Tan Son Nhat Int’l Airport to 2020 and orientation towards 2030.  

In accordance with the adjusted detailed master plan, Tan Son Nhat Int’l Airport is the 4E-level airport of ICAO standard aerodrome code and level-I military airport.

Airfield planning: the capability of the current taxiways and two runways to accommodate code-E aircrafts, apron system with the total aircraft parking stands of 82 aircraft stands comprising of 54 civil aircraft stands and 28 multi-purpose aviation aircraft stands;  accommodate B747, B777/787, A350, A321 and similar types of aircrafts.

Planning of civil aviation area: Tan Son Nhat Int’l Airport will increase the capacity to 25 million pax a year by renovating, expanding passenger terminals, and invest in cargo terminal to enhance the capacity up to 1 million tons/year until 2030 to keep pace with the increasing air traffic in a the specific period. 

Traffic planning: Way in and way out airport: from Hoang Van Thu Park to the airport through Truong Son Str., a two-way street with 6 lanes and median strip; from Tan Son Nhat- Binh Loi Roads to the airport through 02 different lines, 03 lanes/each line. Parking lot in front of the int’l and domestic terminals are planned as multi-storey car park directly linked with way in and out airport.

Based on the guidance of Ministry of Transport, Airports Corporation of Vietnam has implemented many projects so as to improve the traffic movements, handling capacity, passenger service quality of Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

Namely: “International terminal expansion-  Tan Son Nhat International Airport” Project, increasing the int’l terminal handling capacity from 10 million pax a year to 13 million pax a year,  and the total handling capacity of airport to serve up to 25 million pax a year. The development project’s first and second phases is expected to complete respectively in September 2016 and November 2017; “Reconstruction, improvement and expansion of apron - Tan Son Nhat International Airport” Project, increasing the total aircraft parking stands up to 46 aircraft stands replaced the present 40 aircraft stands. The project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2016. 

3. Passenger terminal:

International passenger terminal – Tan Son Nhat International Airport was opened in 2007, covering of 92,000 square meters with the total capacity of 10 million pax a year. The terminals have been installed modern facilities, advanced aviation technology comprising of 80 check-in counters; 01 transfer passenger counter; 12 boarding gates; 08 passenger boarding bridges; 06 arrival conveyor belts; 04 departure conveyor belts; 18 immigration passport control counters; 20 migration passport control counters; 02 departure customs screening machines; 06 arrival customs screening machines …, in order to enhance service quality and provide new types of service, premium service to keep up with the increasing air traffic over the past years. 

Domestic passenger terminal – Tan Son Nhat Int’l Airport covers of 40.048 square meters with the total capacity of 13 million pax per year with modern facilities, high quality conveniences consisting of  111 check-in counters; 01 transfer passenger counter; 01 over size baggage counter; 19 boarding gates; 04 passenger boarding bridges; 06 arrival conveyor belts; 06 departure conveyor belts …

4. Aviation operation:

Presently, Tan Son Nhat International Airport is the busiest airport with the highest handling capacity in Vietnam.

Tan Son Nhat International Airport currently has 47 operating airlines (passenger and cargo airlines), comprising of 04 national airlines (Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Jestar Pacific and VASCO) and 43 international airlines.

Pursuant to the summer 2015 schedule flights, the scheduled flights depart from Tan Son Nhat Int’l airport to 18 national airports and 24 international airports.

Tan Son Nhat International airport has maintained the high growth rate, from 10% to 15% per year in the past years. In 2014, it accommodated more than 22,153 million passengers, increasing 10.6% compared to its in 2013; facilitated over  412,021 tons of cargo a year, increasing 9.6% compared to its in 2013; served  153,939 flights, increasing 10.1% compared to its in 2013.
